MEDICAID WORK INCENTIVE (MWI)

  • The Medicaid Work Incentive was designed for working people with disabilities who do not qualify for a "free" Medicaid services because their income and/or assets are too high
  • The MWI allows a higher income and asset limit and gives you the option to pay a premium for a Medicaid services
  • The MWI is not the same as the Medicaid Spenddown

The purpose of this Program is to encourage people with disabilities to return to work or make more money.

TO QUALIFY:

  • You must have a disability and be employed. A disability is defined as an impairment that significantly limits a person's ability to do basic work activities. Workers with a disability recognized by the Social Security Administration or the State Medicaid Disability Office will be allowed to have income up to 250% of poverty for their household size.
  • Your family (household) Countable-Net-Income must be at or below 250% of poverty level.
    Countable income is generally all unearned income plus about ½ of your earned income. Countable income will be compared to your household size. The following individuals ARE considered in the household size:
      You
      A spouse
      Parents, if you are a minor
      Dependant children
      Children between the ages 18-21 who are full time students

  • Asset Limit. Assets are defined as something that you own or are buying that is worth money. Examples of this would be financial accounts, checking and savings accounts, vehicles, livestock, property, and life insurance that might have a cash value. Your limit for the Medicaid Work Incentive Premium is $15,000.

    The following assets ARE NOT counted towards the $15,000 limit:

      The Home you live in
      Assets of your children
      Your retirement funds
      One vehicle (A second vehicle can be exempt from the asset list IF an additional household member uses the vehicle to go to work.
  • Pay a monthly Premium. The Premium is the amount of money you pay to purchase your Medicaid Card to receive Health Care Services. The Premium is calculated based on 5%, 10%, or 15% of your (the person with a disability) Countable-Net-Income.
It is important to note that the Premium must be paid in cash, check, or money order each month that you want to receive coverage under the Medicaid Work Incentive.
