What are your IEP goals? Know what they are and what you need to do. Schedule time to work on them. You should receive IEP progress reports at the same time as you receive progress reports in regular classes. This could be midterm, end of quarter and parent teacher conferences. Use the progress notes to keep track of your goals.

  • Talk with your special education teacher about your goals, what needs to be accomplished and by what date. Decide what you will do to achieve these goals.
  • Practice your communication and self-advocacy skills. Make sure all your teachers know your accommodations.
  • Track and update your goals (i.e., Student Tracking Form (doc) (pdf), credits needed for graduation, IEP transition goals, 504 Plan, etc.). Keep this in your notebook or portfolio.
  • Continue to develop your SEOP (Student Educational Occupational Plan) with your high school counselor each year.
  • Contact the agency that may provide job training, such as Vocational Rehabilitation or Department of Workforce Services. Apply for these services.
  • Invite the adult agencies to your IEP meeting.
  • Meet with your high school counselor and discuss university, college or applied technology centers and their entrance requirements.
    • Decide which test you need such as the ACT or SAT.
    • Be sure you take all the classes the school requires
    • Have a copy of your transcript sent to the school

If you are thinking about college find out about preparation courses for the SAT or ACT and accommodations you can use on the exams.

Find the services available to students with disabilities. Apply for those services.

Not all of your goals/plans/dreams will meet with success. You may need to make changes along the way. Remember making changes leads to more options. Consider your new options, adjust your goals and keep doing what you need to do to achieve your dreams. Celebrate each step you take and your successes!
